It's simply over heated from extended gaming time. Let me explain...
...Inside your console are heat sinks which are very common in electronics. They are even found in televisions and computers.
They are held in place by glue and sometimes solder. Their sole functions is to remove heat away from the mother board to help it keep cool.
The longer you play Guitar Hero or any other game, the more your unit heats up. As heat builds up in your Xbox console the solder which holds the heat sinks in place becomes brittle and begins breaking up.
Now stay with me...
...once the solder loosens, the heat sinks detach and pull away from the mother board, no longer allowing it to cool.
And your system over heats and the red rings of death appear freezing your hard drive up faster than a radiator filled with water in Alaska. But, the good news is this issue can be repaired rather quickly and you can even fix the three red lights error yourself.
And it sure beats sending it back to Microsoft or paying a repair shop to do it for you.
